Artist's Description
The Pancake Rocks can be found in the Putai area. Formed 30 million years ago from minute pieces of dead marine creatures and plants settling on the seabed about 2 km under the surface. The immense water pressure at this depth caused the fragments to solidify in hard and soft layers. Due to the seismic action in this area the limestone strata was lifted the above the seabed. Mildly acidic rain, wind and seawater slowly created the strange rock forms.
About Steve Taylor
I love working in New Zealand as there is always something new to excite me. I learned the hard way with film B/W, colour negatives and slides and now love the freedom that digital cameras can give you. As I am often several months behind when I start working on my pictures I am often surprised and excited at what I find. Each individual has to be adapted depending on the subject; sometimes they are nearly untouched and others have hours of creative changes to get them looking perfect.

Fascinating. But I think the scientific description is full of beans. Check out the formations on Mount St. Helens. They formed in a few days. Not weathered like this yet, but it doesn't take very long to weather rock. With all these layers looking so much alike, this formed very quickly, perhaps in a matter of minutes.
